EMERALD SPORTS & GAMES…the beginning

Emerald Sports & Games began its operation in Montserrat in 1982. Its location was near to the round- about in the heart of Plymouth. As its name suggested, the company carried mainly sporting items with emphasis on cricket and soccer apparel in its early years. Its reputation for having a wide variety of quality sports products  captured the interest of sports enthusiasts and many others in the Emerald Isle, Montserrat.

EMERALD SPORTS & GAMES…the 90’s

After several years of operation, the management of ESG moved operation into a building opposite the public market. Despite some set-backs due the passage of hurricane Hugo in 1989, ESG continued to develop a more diverse inventory and branched out from sporting goods to embrace general household items and OTC pharmaceutical products.

In 1995, great changes were about to take place for Emerald Sports & Games as Montserrat saw the Soufrière Hills volcano on the verge of an eruption. Plymouth was now under the threat of devastation. Preparations to relocate the store’s operation to Salem began shortly after with the hope that this move would be just a temporary one. However, in August 1997, the capital, Plymouth, was destroyed, for the most part, by a succession of large volcanic eruptions forcing Emerald Sports & Games to  begin the challenge of re-establishing elsewhere.
